Clubs like Manchester United are supported all over the world

The 39th Game

How close was the Premiership to being played abroad?

With the Premier League hosting some of the best players in the world and being arguably the best league in the world, there were talks of extending the season by on game that would played overseas.

All 20 Premier League clubs had agreed to explore the proposal, but the idea had recently been officially rejected by FiFa.

Although the clubs of the Premier League warmed to the idea, some fans were opposed to the proposal.

With the Premier League being as tight as ever as teams are crowned champions and relegated by single points, the idea of another game could cost teams dearly. This then boosts financial implications as for example a game for Wigan against Arsenal in Dubai may improve their TV money; however playing a top team three times instead of twice could relegate them

Many questioned the need to go abroad as they fail to sell tickets at the moment or have indifferent attendances for example Wigan at home to Liverpool the attendance was 24,000 + against Middlesbrough at home in the first game of the season, the attendance was just 14,007

The 39th Premier League game would have allowed the Premiership to share it’s stage with the World and would certainly given a financial boost to many Premier League clubs, the reaction of fans( the ones in Britain anyway) was too negative to pursue.
